I had a day off work today and with two friends, enjoyed an excursion to Tenby Point on Western Point Bay, Victoria.
Sheltered from winds, this area has a number of Mangrove trees. Usually found in tropical regions, Victoria has the pleasure of these special trees in a few select regions.
These amazing trees live in the usually inhospitable sections of intertidal coast, surviving with the aid of a breathable route system which protrude up out of the water apart from the short high tide.
These photographs have all been taken during the afternoon using a wide angle lens, a ND400 filter to enable long exposures and processed with split toning.
Nice photos Caroline, well done. 🙂
Thank you very much 🙂
Great images!
This is very nice!
Such serene images Caroline. x
Thanks Lorraine x
Absolutely gorgeous series Caz! The spit toning is divine and your use of long exposures masterful as ever :-))
Thanks Angie…bit of a trial, not used it before. X
Love the reflections of the trees on the water – seems so surreal 🙂
Thanks :)) Even though I used long exposure, today has been incredibly still for the most part…and I always think Mangroves are pretty surreal anyway !
Beautiful images and processing, Caroline! Great works!
Very nice results!
Beautiful, particularly the 3rd one. I’m not sure what split toning is, but I’ll be sure to ask my photography teacher next class!
Beautiful shots! Someday I’d love to see a mangrove in person.
Simply stunning! 🙂
Superb !
These photos are beautiful.
Beautiful!
Can I ask how one split toning processes them? I’m new to that term, I guess. 🙂
Hi Caitlin..I will put up a tutorial tomorrow…hope it will be of use 🙂
beautiful shots!
eerily beautiful….
great use of the 400 filter. the tones are lovely. I feel the first image has a little too much empty space on top but that is a matter of personal pref. keep em coming
Lovely pics, looks amazing
Wow, amazing pictures! Especially the third one is lovely; the water is so clear!
Those are amazing! Just have a sense of peace about them.
Those are some pretty compelling photographs, especially the first one. Love super wide shots. They make everything look so far away.
Also, congratulations on getting Freshly Pressed!
Caroline, these are lovely photos! When you mention split-toning, I have recollections developing my own film and of prints in a chemical bath in the darkroom. Now theres digital split-toning. Will you please clarify your process for us? Thank you!
Thanks ! Yep..all digital.
And I’m writing a tutorial after the weekend 🙂
These are lovely photos. Great work.
P.S.
If you catch this in time, will you edit my post? I have recollections OF developing my own film. . . Now there’s digital split-toning. . .
Thanks!
Great works, Caroline. Exquisitely surreal.
I’m a professional photographer myself. I also dabble in darkroom work. I’m retired now.
But your work is redefinning landscape photography. Keep up the good work.

Brilliant,Caroline!Just brilliant! 🙂
Keep ’em coming.:)
Congratulations on Being Freshly Pressed, Caroline- this is a beautiful site! Now that I have found you, I must subscribe, to continue seeing such wonderful, intelligent photography.
I have always been an artist, and only picked up “picture taking” to assist in my blogging experience, which has a lot of food posts…I by no means liken myself unto a trained photographer, but I am realizing I need somethng more professional than my $88.00 Walmart-purchased Kodak digital!
Your photos do humble me, yet inspire…what is split-toning, exactly? I am probably not the only viewer who is curious!
Thanks – S. Sienna
Thanks very much! I am going to write a tutorial when I have time on Monday. 🙂
Beautiful!! B&W are my favorites…sometimes less is more. I’ll be posting pics when I get my DSLR soon. What did you use for this? What caused the slightly grey/black siding…or what sort of setting does this?
Cheers!!
Great Pictures….totally cool!

Hi. I really like your photos.:)
I will attempt to photograph mangroves too on my next beach.
After viewing your lovely images, my fear of split toning has subsided. Thank you.
Really wonderful photography. And coming from someone that is not a big tree fan…I am saying a lot 😉 I love how you can make out the dirt in the bottom of the lake.
Love these, they are gorgeous!!!
what’s split toning Caroline? Great images
I especially love the mood of the first photo. Well done.

I like the softening effect that the long exposure brings, very nice! Thanks for sharing!
really nice images.
These are really wonderful pictures, they made me feel both lonely and yet a part of something larger then myself.
Wonderful! I wish I could take pictures like that! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
These are beautiful images and you richly deserve the honor of “freshly pressed” today, great work and congratulations.
Lovely photos – very well-deserving of being Freshly Pressed.
I first discovered you when I started my first ever blog 2 months ago and you commented on my website and blog – thank you for that Caroline.
Now I follow your blog and see you too, like me, plan to blog regularly so I will endeavour to support you through ‘likes’ and comments.
Today I saw your article from your day off on Thursday (3 Feb 2011) ‘Split Toning’. As a consequense, tonight I am reading and learning about this amazing darkroom effect.
I have thanked you on my blog too with a link to your blog.
I trust this is ok with you.

Was just out for a stroll through the blogosphere and found your blog on the wordpress main home page. Thanks for sharing your work!
Take Care,

Beautiful photographs. I wish I had the talent to be able to capture such pretty things. I really love tones in these pictures. They are very soft and elegant, yet deep and riveting. I feel so peaceful just looking at them!
Great work.
-Aubree
I really like the softness of the images. I guess that filter you’re using and the long exposures does that or are you doing any software post processing ?
Beautiful 🙂
Lovely shots and wonderful processing!
We have mangroves in the Philippines too but they’re usually in clusters and not as beautifully isolated as these ones.
Cheers,
Adrian

I usually never leave comments that say “wow”, but
WOOOW 🙂
great stuff
Spectacular series of images … Your blog is attractive AND instructional. I’m subscribing so I can learn more about photography!
Lovely photos! The trees are compelling in the stillness of the water.
I’m curious about split toning. I’ve heard of this technique but not at all familiar with it. Did someone comment that you have an article on this?
Beautifully balanced photographs – I like them a lot! Great work.

These images are lovely, the split toning and edge burning create the mood. Viewing these photos make me want to go to Australia. -Q.

The frames are more in the side photography art than depicting nature.
Very artistic scenes. Very lonely, too. Viewing things from nature’s point, the place must be tough – rough sea and wind much of the time to leave only the toughest standing there.
In my country we have mangrove forests. Real mangrove forests in many regions.
beautiful and breathtaking. and i’m not just throwing words!
the last one is my absolute favorite. may i use it in a poem?
Gorgeous photos.
The photos I take never seem to capture the moment sufficiently. Something tells me your photos go above and beyond that capture.
Beautiful Shot
Absolutely gorgeous photos, the solitary atmosphere is wonderful!

nice work…
but in my area (India, Kerala), mangroves don’t look like these…they have a lot of prop roots from the branches…

Amazing photography.
Well done. Did you do any post-processing?
I usually dislike edited images because people in my photography club tend to HDR things to the point of it looking unnatural. But I like the job you have done with post processing because those colours function well in a natural environment.
Really breath taking shots!
Great post and photos.
nice pictures 🙂
Nice pictures. Those trees grow all over Key West, Fl.
Nice tone caroline, really nice photograph. Inspired me to captured my own.. ^^
lovely picture!
hi… I was wondering if you could possibly give me some tips on how to post pics on my blog?? I am having trouble…
I like the last shot the best. Were there crocodiles, or are they not adapted to salt water?
Absolutely beautiful and dreamy pictures, especially the monochrome ones. We don’t get too many Mangroves in the UK unfortunately, so I’ll have to see if a trip into Wales on a grey day may elicit a similar style 😉
Well done, ND.

Wonderful photos.
lovely photos, did you use a digital camera and if so,what program did you use to get that kind of split toning?
Yes. This image motivates us to protect our climate and its beyond all others.
Beautiful pics!!
Wow, very nice pictures!
Thank you so much everyone!
On my next day off work ( I am a nurse) I will go through your blogs, and also try to answer questions some of you have asked by writing a tutorial on split toning and long exposure.
In the meantime, I will tell you that I use a Pentax k200 ..and for these shots, have used a 10-20 Sigma wide angle lens with a ND400 filter.
Caroline
An enchanting world… leaving me breathless. Thank you for! Greetings, Richard
Nice photos. The photo makes you feel very calm. I love both the B&W and colored. Cool.
It really looks a little surreal, I like that.

greetings from greece 🙂
Very nice! Beautiful imagery.
Really nice pictures!
These really captured my interest. I’m not really a “landscapes” fan but the effect of the time exposure on the water is mesmerizing. Fantastic! Truly. Thanks for sharing.

nice work caroline…
beautiful photos.
using ND filter, very nice 🙂
If I may, I should again like to jump from here, immediately down into the jungles of Costa Rica. As circumstances had it, I happened to find myself here as a young man, in the southern region of this delightful country, searching for gold. Nature called me again. Although there were many others at this site, I had found a somewhat private spot in a marshy area in which to relieve myself. It was in an estuary where the Tiger River emptied into the Pacific. All about me were scraggly mangrove trees, struggling to survive, despite the efforts of all us money hungry, gold mongering humans. Most of my compadres here were poor Costa Rican families, attempting to eke out an existence with gold specks. My only excuse for being amongst this select crowd was an insatiable quest for adventure, which seemed to be churning up my insides.
Mangrove trees have spear like seeds that are about the dimensions of a slightly over-sized piece of asparagus. Upon maturity, these seeds drop from the branches of the trees, and like little darts, stick into the mud, hoping to bloom up and grow into nice big mangrove trees. So I am here, squatted in the midst of these tropical, bush-like mangrove trees, trying to find some privacy and hide from the other ‘armadillos’, as gold panners were referred to. I failed to notice a large mangrove seed that happened to be sticking up at the exact spot that I had picked. As I rather clumsily squatted down, this particular half seed, half stick, zeroed in on me, like a heat sinking missile, and the next thing I knew, I was flashing back to my babyhood and the days of rectal temperatures.
In an instant the 8-inch mangrove spear had plunged into me, a direct hit, not even scraping the sides. I leaped up, not at all injured, but very surprised and shocked to say the least. With my pants down, I was stupefied. I slightly stumbled, looking down to see what had caused this very weird feeling. It felt as if I was receiving an enema with a fire hose. I continued stumbling, lost my footing and rolled head over heels, through the brush into the open and down a small rocky hill. It happened in an instant. Without realizing it, I was at the bottom of the hill and had come to rest directly on top of a giant ‘leaf cutter’ ant mound. . . . . .
more later, this is probably enough

Would appreciate if you could answer me, but if its a trade secret I would understand lol.
